Nawanshahr is the main town of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district, in the south-east of Punjab's Doaba region. The district is named after Bhagat Singh, whose ancestral village, Khatkar Kalan, is nearby. Like much of Doaba, the district has many families with relatives abroad, so airport trips and visitors from overseas are part of daily life.
Quick answer: For most Nawanshahr travellers, Chandigarh airport is the nearest, at about 95 to 105 km by road and around 2 hours. Amritsar and Delhi are much further. We run all three at fixed fares, with a name board pickup and flight tracking, booked on WhatsApp +91 99148 41000.
Why Chandigarh is usually the nearest
The district's own website lists Chandigarh International Airport as the nearest airport, at about 103 km from Nawanshahr. Online route planners show figures from about 95 km upward depending on the route, so treat 95 to 105 km and roughly 2 hours as the working range. The airport is on the Mohali side, so you generally avoid Chandigarh city traffic. Read our Chandigarh airport taxi page for how pickups work, and the Tricity and Ropar airport guide for nearby routes.
| From Nawanshahr to | Approx. distance | Approx. time |

| Chandigarh airport | 95-105 km | about 2 hours |
| Amritsar airport | roughly 150 km | 3 hours or a little more |
| Delhi IGI | roughly 400 km | 7-8 hours |
The Amritsar and Delhi figures are rounded estimates, so WhatsApp us for an exact figure and leaving time for your pickup point.
Visiting Khatkar Kalan
Khatkar Kalan is Bhagat Singh's ancestral village, and the Bhagat Singh Museum there is the main reason visitors come. Punjab Tourism's page for the museum lists free entry and no photography, with hours of 9:00 am to 4:45 pm from Tuesday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays and public holidays. Upgrade work on the museum has been reported in the press over the past few years, so please check the current hours and what is open before you set out. The village is a short drive from Nawanshahr; we do not quote a distance here, so ask us for one with your starting point.
Many visitors from abroad come around 23 March, the anniversary of Bhagat Singh's martyrdom, and that period is busy on the roads. Book early if you plan to visit then.
Airport choices for the district
- Chandigarh (IXC): nearest for most of the district. Good when your flight departs from Chandigarh.
- Amritsar (ATQ): the main airport for direct overseas flights from Punjab, though airlines change routes, so check current schedules. See Amritsar airport taxi.
- Delhi IGI: the widest choice of flights and a long drive. Our Delhi airport to Punjab guide has the detail.

Onward travel from Nawanshahr
Fares we publish for Chandigarh start points include Chandigarh to Delhi at ₹4,200 and Chandigarh to Amritsar at ₹3,800 for a sedan, one way, toll and state tax extra. For Nawanshahr itself, we quote each trip. WhatsApp us the pickup point, destination and date, and a fixed fare comes back within about 10 minutes, with no surge pricing. See Chandigarh taxi service and our Hoshiarpur taxi guide for nearby routes.
On arrivals we track the flight, meet you with a name board and give the first 2 hours of delay free. We run 24/7, so late landings are fine.
Planning a Khatkar Kalan day
A visit to the museum fits a half-day. A sensible plan is to leave Nawanshahr in the morning, spend an hour or two at the museum and the village, and be back by early afternoon. Because it is closed on Mondays and public holidays according to Punjab Tourism, pick a Tuesday to Sunday. If you are visiting from abroad, build the trip around your arrival, not on the day you land, so jet lag does not shorten it.
We can combine the visit with an airport run. For example, a driver can collect you from Chandigarh airport, take you to Nawanshahr and the village on the way, and drop you at your family home. Tell us the plan on WhatsApp and we will suggest timings.
Winter and fog
Early morning flights from Chandigarh or Amritsar mean a pre-dawn drive from Nawanshahr. From November to January, fog can slow the roads, so we advise adding extra time to the normal drive and confirming the pickup time the evening before.
