Sri Muktsar Sahib is a sacred city in south-west Punjab, remembered for the last battle fought by Guru Gobind Singh and the Forty Liberated Ones. Pilgrims arrive all year, and in mid-January the whole town fills for Maghi.
Quick answer: Sri Muktsar Sahib is about 190 km from Amritsar airport, 250 km from Chandigarh airport and roughly 380 km from Delhi IGI by road. During Maghi Mela in mid-January, roads get crowded, so book early. WhatsApp +91 99148 41000 for a fixed fare confirmed in about 10 minutes.
The story behind the city
The city was once called Khidrana. After the battle fought near the Khidrane di Dhab pool in 1705, it was named Muktsar, meaning the pool of liberation. The forty Sikhs, led by Mahan Singh, had earlier left the Guru and then returned to fight, with Mai Bhago encouraging them. Gurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib marks the place where the Guru is said to have torn up their letter of renunciation, which is why it is called the place of the broken tie, restored. Several other gurdwaras stand around it.
Maghi Mela
Maghi Mela is held around 13 and 14 January, commemorating the Forty Muktas. Devotees gather for prayers, processions and kirtan, and many bathe in the sarovar. Vehicle movement near the gurdwara can be restricted on the main days, and the surrounding roads fill with buses, tractors and cars. Fog is also common in January.
Plan your trip with these points in mind:
- Book your taxi days ahead, not on the morning.
- Allow extra time to reach the gurdwara area on foot.
- Agree a clear pickup point for the return.

Many Muktsar families have relatives in Canada and the UK, and Delhi is a common gateway. Our Malwa cities to Delhi airport guide explains how long to allow. For Amritsar flights, see the Amritsar airport taxi page. A sedan from Delhi IGI to Amritsar is ₹6,500 one-way, toll and state tax extra, and for Muktsar routes a fixed fare is confirmed on WhatsApp within about 10 minutes.
Pilgrims travelling from far away
Pilgrims often come from Bathinda, Faridkot and Ferozepur, and also from Haryana and Rajasthan. Neighbouring guides such as Faridkot and Bathinda cover those routes. Groups can ask us for a larger vehicle, and we confirm what is available when you message us.
Booking and payment
We run 24/7, track your flight and the driver meets you with a name board. The first 2 hours of delay are free. Fares are fixed with no surge, and toll and state tax are extra. You can pay by card, UPI, cash or bank transfer. Read the one-way fare explainer to understand how pricing works.
Roads, weather and timing
Roads around Muktsar are mostly flat and straight, but fog in January can cut visibility sharply, and that overlaps with Maghi. Drivers on these roads are used to it, and we advise leaving early rather than rushing. Summer, by contrast, is hot and dry, and a car with working air conditioning matters on long runs.
If you are flying out after the mela, build in a generous margin. Traffic on the day after Maghi is usually heavy as visitors head home together. For Delhi departures, our Delhi airport taxi to Punjab page explains the process in reverse.
Families often combine Maghi with a visit to relatives in nearby villages. Tell us each stop when you book, and we plan one fixed fare for the whole day instead of separate negotiations on the road. For out-of-town visitors, we can also meet you at the railway station or the bus stand with a name board.
