Anandpur Sahib, the City of Bliss, stands at the edge of the Shivalik hills in Rupnagar district. It is where the Khalsa was created on Vaisakhi in 1699, and it is a place most Sikh families want to visit at least once.
Quick answer: Anandpur Sahib is about 80 to 90 km from Chandigarh Airport, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Delhi is much further, so most visitors fly into Chandigarh. A fixed fare is confirmed on WhatsApp within about 10 minutes.
What to see
- Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib: one of the five Takhts of Sikhism, central to the Khalsa's founding. It is the main reason most pilgrims come.
- Virasat-e-Khalsa: a museum and heritage complex on the Khalsa story, designed by architect Moshe Safdie and opened in 2011. It is worth a few hours, but check opening days and any ticket rules before your visit.
- Gurdwara Sri Qila Anandgarh Sahib and Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib: also in the town area and often visited together with the Takht.
Dress modestly, cover your head and take off shoes at the entrance. Early morning is calmer.
Hola Mohalla
Hola Mohalla is held the day after Holi, usually in March, and runs for about three days. It features Nihang martial displays, processions and a large langar presence, and the final procession begins at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib. The crowds are very large. If you plan to attend:
- Book your taxi well ahead, as availability tightens.
- Expect road closures and parking at a distance from the main area.
- Agree a pickup spot and time with your driver, since phone signal can be patchy in the crowds.
- Start early, and plan the return before the evening rush.

Pairing with other places
A common one-day circuit is Ropar, Chamkaur Sahib and Anandpur Sahib. For a wider trip, see the three Takhts circuit, the Ropar guide and the Fatehgarh Sahib guide. Khanna and Ludhiana families often drive up for the day.
For NRI visitors
Many families land at Chandigarh or Delhi and go straight to the Takht. We track your flight, meet you with a name board and give the first 2 hours of delay free. Read about NRI airport pickup.
Practical tips
Winter mornings here can be cold and foggy, and the town gets very busy on Sangrand and gurpurab days as well as at Hola Mohalla. If you travel with elders, ask for a pickup close to the gurdwara entrance and tell us how long you plan to stay, so the driver waits nearby. Langar is available at the gurdwaras, so you do not need to plan meals, though you may wish to carry water and a head covering. Return traffic towards Ropar and Chandigarh is slowest in the early evening.
