Fatehgarh Sahib and Sirhind Taxi Guide - Shaheedi Jor Mela, Gurdwara Visits and Airport Transfers

· 4 min read · by Punjab Taxi Co

Fatehgarh Sahib, beside the old town of Sirhind, is one of the most solemn places in Sikh history. It is where the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, were martyred in December 1704, and their grandmother Mata Gujri Ji attained martyrdom at the Thanda Burj shortly afterwards. Many families visit to pay respects, and a taxi makes the day calmer, especially with elders.

Quick answer: Fatehgarh Sahib is about 45 to 50 km from Chandigarh Airport, roughly 1 to 1.25 hours by road, and around 250 km from Delhi. We run fixed-fare taxis to and from both airports, and the fare is confirmed on WhatsApp within about 10 minutes.

Why people come here

Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib marks the place associated with the martyrdom of the two Sahibzade, aged 9 and 6 by the usual account, who refused to give up their faith. Nearby is the site connected with Mata Gujri Ji at the Thanda Burj. Diwan Todar Mal, who arranged the land for the last rites, is also remembered here. Please dress modestly, cover your head, and keep voices low. Footwear is left at the entrance, and photography rules vary by area, so follow the signs.

The Shaheedi Jor Mela in December

Each year a large gathering, the Shaheedi Jor Mela, is held in late December over about three days, drawing devotees from across Punjab and abroad. The exact dates follow the Sikh calendar and are announced locally, so confirm them before planning. Expect heavy crowds, road diversions and parking limits near the gurdwara. We suggest:

  • Travel early in the morning and aim to finish before the evening rush.
  • Ask the driver to drop you at the nearest permitted point and agree a pickup spot and time.
  • Allow extra time on the way back, as the main road through Sirhind slows down.
  • Dress warmly. December mornings are cold and foggy.

Distances and airports

From Fatehgarh Sahib Approx. distance Note
Chandigarh Airport (IXC) 45 to 50 km About 1 to 1.25 hours
Delhi IGI roughly 250 km Several hours; plan a buffer
Ludhiana roughly 50 km Via the GT Road corridor

Our published sedan fare from Delhi IGI to Chandigarh is ₹4,200 one-way, and the Delhi IGI to Ludhiana fare is ₹5,200. Fatehgarh Sahib sits between the two on the same road, but we confirm its own fixed fare on WhatsApp. Toll and state tax are extra. For the full airport comparison see the Tricity and Ropar airport guide and the Chandigarh airport taxi page. If you land in Delhi, our Delhi airport to Chandigarh taxi route passes this corridor.

Other places in Sirhind

Sirhind has Mughal-era remains too, including the Rauza Sharif complex and the Aam Khas Bagh. Most visitors spend their time at the gurdwaras, but if you have an extra hour we can stop at one of these. Check access rules locally.

Combining a Sikh heritage day

Fatehgarh Sahib pairs with Chamkaur Sahib, Anandpur Sahib and the Takht at Talwandi Sabo in many family itineraries. Our three Takhts circuit guide explains how the places link, and the Anandpur Sahib taxi guide covers the next stop.

Booking from abroad

Families flying in from Canada, the UK or elsewhere often go straight from the airport to pay respects before heading home. Tell us when booking and we plan the route around it. We track your flight, meet you with a name board, and the first 2 hours of delay are free.

Planning the day respectfully

Most visitors spend two to three hours across the gurdwaras. Elders may prefer a driver who waits close by, and we can arrange that. If you are coming from Chandigarh or Mohali, the drive is a straightforward run down the highway, and from Ludhiana or Khanna it is a short trip up the GT Road corridor. Fog in December and January can slow the road a great deal, so start after sunrise where you can and tell us if anyone in the group has trouble walking long distances.
